Makoto Mizuhara, a high school student and science whiz, was working on a project for the school festival with his best friend Nanami Jinnai. Unbeknownst to Makoto, his lifelong rival Katsuhiko Jinnai, the student council president, was suspicious of his intentions and felt threatened by his potential to usurp his position. A lab accident caused by Jinnai's sabotage leads to the four of them - Makoto, Nanami, Jinnai, and their teacher Masamichi Fujisawa - being transported to the world of El-Hazard. There, they encounter giant bug monsters and meet Rune Venus, the princess of Roshtaria.
