Mars, a human colony, uses robots called "dolls" instead of children. Layla, a skilled fighter, travels the world with Nei, a unique doll, and Speedy, a doll breeder. Their movements are seen as a threat by the Martian founders, who repeatedly attack them, gradually uncovering details about Layla and Nei's past and potential future.
