The 1966 anime series "Jungle Emperor" sequel, "Jungle Taitei: Susume Leo!", was produced by Dr. Tezuka without a deal with NBC. Consequently, its tone differs from the original, with more character deaths and darker episodes. The series follows the story of Rune, the male cub of Kimba and Kitty, as he grows and learns from his father. It takes place a few years after the events of the original "Kimba" series, with Kimba now an adult.
