Galactic Patrol Lensman

Kimball Kinnison's life takes a dramatic turn when a Galactic Patrol ship crash-lands on his family's property, leaving a pilot on the brink of death. The pilot hands Kim a Lens before passing away, and this mysterious device becomes a turning point in Kim's life, influencing events such as his father's death and a space battle. The Lens, half-sentient and implanted in Kim's hand, also leads him to meet Chris, a Galactic Patrol nursing officer.
