The cause appears linked to the 2004 Fifth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki, Japan. Chaldea uses the experimental Rayshift technology to send Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight back to 2004 to identify a course of action to save humanity, making them part of a "grand order" to alter the past and restore the future.
